Set a recipe's yield

Tell Maitaki how much a recipe makes, so it can show what one portion, quart or pound of it costs.

A recipe’s yield is how much one batch makes: 1 portion for a plated dish, 2 qt for a sauce, 24 ea for a tray of cookies. Maitaki divides the batch cost by the yield to show what each unit of it costs.

Set the yield

  1. Tap Library, then the Recipes tab, and open the recipe.
  2. Tap the pencil icon at the top right.
  3. Under Recipe Yield, enter the amount and pick a unit.
  4. Tap Done.

A new recipe starts at 1 serving. The yield shows under the recipe’s name as Yields 2 qt.

Read the two costs

The top of the recipe shows two numbers:

NumberWhat it is
Food costWhat the whole batch costs at today’s prices
per your unitFood cost divided by the yield

Example: a marinara costs $9.60 to make and yields 4 qt. It shows $9.60 and $2.40 per qt.

Lines that show — couldn’t be priced and count as $0, so both numbers are low until they’re fixed. See Units and conversions in recipes.

Pick the right unit

  • Plated dishes: 1 portion or 1 serving, so the per-portion cost is the plate cost.
  • Sauces, soups and dressings: a volume like qt or gal, so other recipes can use a measured amount.
  • Doughs and proteins you portion by weight: lb or kg.
  • Things you count out: ea or piece.

The yield unit matters most when the recipe is used inside another one. See Use prep recipes inside dishes.

Common questions

I sell the same recipe in two sizes. Do I need two recipes?

No. Keep one recipe and add sizes to it. See Add sizes to a recipe.

The per-portion cost looks too high.

Check the yield. A recipe left at 1 serving that really makes 12 shows the whole batch as one portion. Change the yield and tap Done.

Does the cost update on its own?

Yes. Each ingredient is priced from your latest invoices, so the food cost and per-unit cost move when prices change. See Cost a recipe.
