Set your sales tax rate
Add your location's sales tax rate, change it when the rate changes, and keep the history of past rates.
Also known as: sales tax percentage · tax change · new tax rate · tax percent · vat · gst · tax inclusive · tax settings · state tax · city tax
Some sales come into Maitaki with the tax already inside the amount: card terminal charges and cash you log by hand. Maitaki uses your sales tax rate to take the tax back out, so your net sales aren’t inflated. Each rate has a start date, so a rate change never rewrites the days before it.
Do you need one?
| Your sales come from | Do you need a rate? |
|---|---|
| Toast, Clover or Loyverse only | No. They report tax themselves, and Maitaki never changes it. |
| A Valor card terminal | Yes. |
| Cash you log in Maitaki | Yes. |
The Sales tax section in settings lists each of your sources and says which applies, for example reports tax itself → never changed or tax included in the amount → estimated.
Add a rate
- Open the account menu (your location and avatar, top right on a phone; bottom left on a computer) and tap Settings.
- Tap your location, then Sales.
- Scroll to Sales tax and tap Add a rate.
- Enter the Rate (%), like 10.5.
- Set From, the first day the rate applies.
- Leave To (optional) empty, so the rate runs until the next one.
- Add a Note (optional) if it helps, like City rate increase.
- Tap Save.
Maitaki re-counts every day the rate covers. You’ll see Re-counting sales with progress, then Saved and how many days were re-counted.
When the rate changes
Add a new rate with the new From date. The rate before it ends the day before, on its own. Your list then shows both, like:
- 10.5% Apr 1, 2026 → Sep 30, 2026
- 11% Oct 1, 2026 → now
Days before the change keep the old rate.
Fix or remove a rate
- In Sales tax, tap the rate.
- Change it and tap Save, or tap Delete to remove it.
Either way, the days it covers are re-counted.
Common questions
What happens if I don't set a rate?
Sales from sources that include tax are counted with the tax inside, so your net sales, labor % and food cost % are all a little off. The section says No sales tax rate set until you add one.
I set the rate late. Do old days get fixed?
Yes. Set From to the date the rate really started, and Maitaki re-counts every day from then.
