Fix "Can't price" and "Needs pack" lines
Tell Maitaki what's in a case so it can work out a unit price.
Also known as: case size · pack size · units per case · each · per item · no pack · inner pack · case pack · cs · unit doesnt convert · price per pound
An invoice tells Maitaki how many you bought: 2 cases. To turn that into a price per gallon or per pound, Maitaki also needs to know what one case holds. That’s the pack, written like 1 case = 6 × 1 gal: one case is six one-gallon jugs. When a line has no pack, Maitaki can’t price it, and the invoice waits in review.
Find the lines
On the invoice, the check chip reads N lines can’t be priced. Tap the Can’t price filter chip above the lines to see only those. Each one is marked:
- Needs pack: Maitaki doesn’t know what’s in one case, box or pack.
- Unit doesn’t convert: the line is in one kind of unit and its ingredient in another, like a line in pounds for an ingredient counted by each.
Set the pack
- Tap the line. You’ll see Can’t price this line yet and the reason.
- Next to Line · extracted from invoice, tap Edit.
- Under Pack — each case contains (or box, or pack, depending on how you bought it), fill in how many units are in one case, the size of each unit, and its measure. For a case of six one-gallon jugs: 6 units of 1 gal.
- Tap Save.
The line now shows its Unit cost, such as $4.25 / gal, and the chip clears. When the line has a SKU, Maitaki keeps the pack with that product, so it’s there the next time you buy it.
For something bought by the each, bag or tub, you’ll see Unit size (optional) instead: 1 tub = 5 lb, for example. Fill it in when one item holds a measured amount. Leave it blank if it’s only a count.
Not sure what’s in the case? Look at the original invoice, the label on the case, or the vendor’s order guide. Many invoices print it in the description, like 6/1 GAL or 4/10#.
Fix “Unit doesn’t convert”
Say an ingredient is priced per each, and a new invoice bills it by the pound. Pounds can’t be turned into eaches, so that price never reaches the ingredient. You have three ways out:
- If the ingredient should be measured the way this line is, tap Measure ingredient in unit in the note.
- If the pack is wrong, correct it under Edit as above.
- If the line is linked to the wrong ingredient, change it. See Link a line to the right ingredient.
When the line and its SKU disagree
Sometimes a line’s pack is different from the pack Maitaki has on file for that product. You’ll see The line and its SKU disagree on the pack, with both shown.
- Tap Update SKU to the line’s pack if the vendor has changed the pack. This invoice and later ones use the new pack; earlier ones keep theirs.
- Tap Fix line to the SKU’s pack if this line was read wrong.
Fill in a whole vendor at once
Some vendors never print what’s in a case on their invoices. When that happens, you’ll see a note like N lines from vendor have no pack printed, with Upload order guide. A vendor’s order guide lists the pack for every product, so uploading it fills them all in, on every invoice. See Upload a vendor’s order guide.
Case or per item, and catch weight
- Case billing vs per-item billing. Some vendors print the case pack but charge per item, such as one bottle out of a case of 12. If the pack and the billing don’t match, the price looks far too high or too low, and Maitaki flags it with Check price and suggests a pack. See Handle “Price looks off”.
- Catch weight. Meat and cheese are often billed by actual weight, like 12.4 lb @ $3.10/lb. These lines are priced per pound already and don’t need a pack.
Common questions
Can I verify without fixing these lines?
Yes. In the Verify invoice sheet, tap Looks fine on N lines can’t be priced. The invoice is verified, but those lines won’t update the ingredient’s price until they have a pack.
I set the pack but the price still looks wrong.
Check the Price matches the way the line was bought, per case or per item, and that the count and size are the right way round: 6 units of 1 gal, not 1 unit of 6 gal. See Set a product’s pack size.
