Cost by count with a piece weight
Use "2 lemons" in a recipe when lemons are priced per pound.
Also known as: each to pound · count to weight · per piece · average weight · how much does one weigh · each to lb · unit weight · convert each · piece size
Weight converts to weight and count converts to count, but a pound can’t become “2 lemons” on its own. A piece weight bridges the two: tell Maitaki that one lemon weighs about 0.25 lb, and a recipe can use lemons by the piece while they’re priced by the pound, or the other way round.
Add a piece weight
- Tap Library, then the ingredient.
- Tap Edit at the top right.
- Under One piece weighs about (optional), enter the weight of one average piece and pick its unit: lb, oz, g or kg. For liquids sold by the piece, like a bottle, you can use fl oz or ml.
- Tap Save.
Recipe lines that couldn’t be priced because of the count-to-weight gap now show a cost.
Not sure what one weighs?
Tap Suggest. Maitaki proposes a typical weight and shows how it got there, like Suggested: followed by its reasoning. Nothing is saved until you tap Save, so change the number first if you know better. If it can’t suggest one, you’ll see No suggestion with the reason.
Weigh a few. A suggestion is an average. Put five lemons from your last delivery on the scale and divide by five for a number that matches what you buy.
What it’s used for
- Recipes. 2 lemons in a recipe, when lemons are priced per lb. Or 4 oz of something priced per each.
- Packs. A case counted in pieces, like 115 lemons, for an ingredient priced per lb. The piece weight turns the count into pounds.
Under the field, Maitaki says where the current value came from: Set by your team., From an order guide, or an estimate. A value your team sets is never replaced automatically.
Remove it
Clear the box and tap Save. Leave it empty for things you never count, like flour or oil.
Common questions
Should I change the pricing unit instead?
Only if every product for the ingredient is measured that way. A piece weight is for when you buy one way and use another. See Choose an ingredient’s pricing unit.
The count on a product looks wrong, like 25 each for a case of bacon.
That’s usually a wrong pack, not a piece weight problem. Fix the pack first. See Set a product’s pack size.
My recipe line still shows a dash.
Some units never convert, like portion, batch or sprig. See Units and conversions in recipes.
