Write recipe instructions
Add the method as numbered steps, drag them into order, and tag ingredients so they stand out.
Also known as: method · steps · procedure · directions · how to make · prep notes · cooking instructions · spec card · line card · mention ingredient
Instructions turn a costed recipe into one your cooks can follow. They’re numbered steps under the ingredients, and any ingredient you name in a step is highlighted.
Add steps
- Tap Library, then the Recipes tab, and open the recipe.
- Tap the pencil icon at the top right. On a recipe with no steps yet, you can also tap Add instructions.
- Scroll to Instructions and tap Add step.
- Type the step. Press return to start the next one.
- Tap Done to save.
Keep each step to one action, the way you’d say it on the line: Sear the patty 3 minutes a side.
Tag an ingredient
While typing a step, type @ and the first letters of an ingredient. Pick it from the list and its name drops into the step.
Only ingredients already in the recipe show up, so add those first. Once saved, each ingredient’s name is highlighted wherever it appears in the steps, whether you tagged it or typed it out.
Reorder or remove steps
| To | Do this |
|---|---|
| Move a step | Hold the dotted handle on its left and drag it up or down |
| Remove a step | Tap the trash icon on its right |
| Remove an empty step | Press delete in it |
Steps renumber themselves. Tap Done when you’re finished.
Common questions
Can I add a prep note to a single ingredient instead?
Yes. When you add an ingredient, tap a quick note like diced or minced, or type your own in Prep (optional). It shows after the ingredient’s name, as in Onion — diced.
Can Maitaki write the steps for me?
Chat can draft a whole recipe, steps included, for you to approve and edit. See Draft a recipe with Chat.
Do instructions change the cost?
No. Only the ingredients and the yield affect the cost.
